Repetitive Strain Injuries

Repetitive strain injury is the body's response to excessive and repetitive demands placed on it. Repetitive strain injuries consist of excessive wear and tear on the soft tissues of the body (nerves, tendons, etc.). They result from performing the same activity over and over again, from typing on a keyboard to swinging a baseball bat.

Typical symptoms include tightness, throbbing, numbness, tingling, burning, dull aches, sharp pain, and loss of strength in your upper extremities.
When physical activities (work, sports, hobbies, etc.) become excessive to the point of injury, typically aches and pains are the first symptoms to arise. Severity of symptoms tends to increase if the activity is continued. When symptoms continue after normal rest, this may indicate a continuous problem. If you experience RSI related pain, consult your physician.

What can you do to avoid such injuries? Make sure you vary the physical activities that you do throughout the day. Take care of yourself through good nutrition and exercise. Design your workplace and home office for greater flexibility. Keep items that you use frequently close to you. This will help to eliminate reaching and straining for those items.
